A journey through the city’s past: Roman stone underfoot, whitewash and shadow, a long table nobody hurries. One unhurried day in Beja, for travellers who would rather understand a place than tick it off.

Raised around an accomplished archaeologist grandfather and a mother who taught history and worked in archaeology herself, I grew up reading this town the slow way: walking it, eating in it, asking the people who’ve been here longer than the buildings. My favourite moment of the day is small: I stop on an ordinary street, point at something you’d never notice, and watch it change in front of you.
If you are visiting Beja for a day, these are the four places the day is built around. Each one has a story most visitors walk past.

At Praça da República, we discover the remains of a Roman temple and the history of Pax Iulia, the Roman city that became Beja.

Even the name Beja is Arabic. In the old Mouraria we follow al-Mu’tamid, the poet-king born here in 1040.

198 marble steps up the Torre de Menagem, and the whole Alentejo plain opens below you. Entry included.

Lunch at a regional restaurant and a visit to Maltesinhas, which we consider one of Portugal’s finest traditional pastry shops. Lunch is paid separately.
Private or small-group, with attention to rhythm and comfort.
Staying around Beja and wanting one day that truly counts.
Road-trippers crossing Southern Portugal, looking for a stop worth stopping for.
Already in the region, ready to see it through new eyes.
